How To Clean Hats With Mold
Allow your hat to dry in the sun for awhile as direct sunlight can often kill many different types of mold spores.

Dish soap can do in a pinch but detergent or a dedicated stain fighting treatment like oxiclean is stronger and works harder at getting the stains out of the hat s fibers. Be sure to use rubber gloves when applying the detergent to the mold. Flip the hat over at some point so the bottom or inside can dry. Lay the hat flat on a clean surface. If it happens shake off excess water and allow it to air dry.
Lay the hat out on a clean surface and let it air dry. To take care of stains sprinkle a light coat of talcum powder on the hat. Spray these areas with stain remover or a laundry pre treatment. Spot clean your hat if there are stains or very soiled areas. Scrub off any mold along with dust and debris using a soft brush.
Avoid getting your suede hat excessively wet. Be sure to wash your hat with detergent afterward. The washing machine will be rougher on your hat so check the instructions that came with the mold you choose. Rinse by wiping with a clean white cloth dipped in water. Hang your hat in the sun.
Let the stain remover sit for a few minutes then rinse the areas with water. After plenty of sunlight has been distributed evenly over your hat presoak it in cold water possibly with a bleach solution color safe if your hat has colors in it and then machine wash it with warm water and detergent. Lemon juice and salt in cold water has also been used with colored fabrics as well as a vinegar solution to aid in smell removal. Allow the hat to dry thoroughly before continuing if it is damp. Flip sock hats inside out for awhile too.
Mold spores that are brushed off could make their home in a new location and you don t want that to happen inside of your house. Rinse the spots with water after applying the mild detergent to them. Spot clean the hat first as needed. Soak the wool clothing in a bucket of cold water for one hour and then rub a few drops of mild detergent on the moldy spots. If a normal wash cycle doesn t work try adding 3 4 of a cup of vinegar to your wash cycle to neutralize the mold.
